HTTP-HyperText Transfer Protocol.
A protocol used by the World Wide Web. It defines how messages are formatted and transmitted and the actions of servers and browsers should take in response to a particular command.
E.g.: Enter a URL in google chrome = sends http command to the web server directing it to find and transmit to page.
TCP/IP-Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol
A set of communication protocols used to connect hosts on the internet. TCP deals with the connection and the exchange of data, IP deals with identifying certain "data" types and transfer them into specified "packets" so that they will reach their specified destination.
FTP-File Transfer Protocol.
A protocol for exchanging files over the internet.Uses the internet's TCP/IP protocol to enable data transfer.Mostly used to download a file from a server using the internet. E.G. download file - searches and locates address.
SMTP-Simple Mail Transfer Protocol.
A set of protocols that allow a unit/software to transfer email over the internet. It offers a set of code that can be understood by other servers.It also offers a set of rules ,communication rules to other servers.Such as responding to a failed message transmission to another server or identifying the action a server is trying to perform or the identity of a server.
IPX/SPX-Internetwork Packet Exchange/Sequenced Packet Exchange
A protocol that provide packet switching and arrangement of data. They are compatible with LAN or private networks.SPX is used for client or server applications to provide connection. IPX contains data.
NetBeui- NetBios Extended User Interface.
A protocol for DOS or PCs for single LAN network.It doesn't have have a network address for connection to different networks.
AppleTalk
Local Area Network built into all macintosh units. With AppleTalk ,any computer unit can be connected.
