Now , what is a network ? A network is a group of computer systems that has been linked together.
There are numerous uses and functions of a network,but all of it is concerned with the sharing of data between units(CREATING A VIRTUAL SPACE,DOWNLOADING DATA FROM PEER TO PEER). I will illustrate a mind map which will summarise the functions,features and uses of a network.

A protocol is simply a set of rules and signals that computer systems used to communicate with each-other.
Handshaking:
It is a set of networking process when two computers are establishing a connection. It is used to determine which protocols and speeds,and method of transmission to be used.It is necessary because of the different specifications of computer units
